Role/Subject Specific Information
The role of lecturer (0.5 FTE) is based in the Division of Dietetics, Nutrition and Biological Sciences, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Radiography within the School of Health Sciences. The role holder will contribute to the planning, review and delivery of learning and teaching in Physical Activity for health and wellbeing, Exercise Prescription and Vocational training for Exercise professionals as part of the BSc (Hons) Physical Activity Health and Wellbeing programme. This programme sits within the Subject Area of Dietetics, Nutrition and Biological Sciences (DNBS).
We are planning to become a recognised REPS training provider for the level 2, 3 and 4 exercise instructor awards and the post holder will be required take a key role in securing this recognition. It is also expected that the post holder will develop commercial opportunities for external facing exercise training courses, and strengthen links with external partners to develop research and knowledge exchange projects.
The Division is committed to providing academic programmes that integrate academic and practical based study to enable health and wellbeing practitioners, scientists and health care professionals of the future to have a high intellectual and practical ability. The Division sits within the School and one of the goals of the School is to manage the operational delivery of high quality teaching and learning, research, consultancy and commercialisation activities. Within the school, the Subject Area of DNBS will work to an annual operational plan, which will provide its priorities, focus and direction for each planning year.
Role Purpose
- Lead on teaching and facilitating learning, embedding physical activity for health and wellbeing in core modules for BSc (Hons) Physical Activity Health and Wellbeing (PAWS)
- Lead on scoping, evaluation and resource development to meet the requirements for applying for recognition as a REPS training provider
- Contribute to programme development/ writing of modules to be integrated within the curricula, including development of external professional networks to support the students
- To take independent decisions regarding student issues
- Use initiative, experience and knowledge to solve problems
- As an active member of the team, contribute to building team morale and to be supportive and encouraging of others
Principal Duties or Key Objectives
- Develop resources and deliver teaching, fostering debate to encourage the development of intellectual reasoning and rigour with students within physical activity, health and wellbeing
- Participate in curriculum development and design - complete the documentation required for seeking recognition for QMU/PAWS as a REPS training provider
- Engage in relevant research/knowledge exchange activity
- Develop and participate in networks within the institution and externally supportive of PAWS programme objectives
- Provide pastoral care to both undergraduate and postgraduate students

Hold a BSc/BSc (Hons) degree in a related area such as Public Health/Health Promotion, Exercise/Sports Science, Education, Community Development, or Coaching
Experience of teaching in Higher Education/Further Education or equivalent
Hold current Register of Exercise Professionals qualification at a minimum of level 3 - e.g. Personal Trainer/Exercise Referral
Experience of engagement in physical activity, health and wellbeing community based programmes supporting clients from a variety of backgrounds, including children, older people, those with long-term conditions, deprived or hard to reach groups
Good communication and professional networking skills
Established organisational and problem solving skills
Evidence of team working

Hold, or working towards, a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline
Have experience of Higher Education/Further Education programme development and validation
Experience of teaching and assessing REPS qualifications, and hold the Assessor and Internal/External Verification qualifications
Critical awareness of salutogenic approaches to Health and Wellbeing , commitment to widening participation, and third sector partnership working
