Role Purpose
Working as part of the Accommodation Services team to provide a friendly and professional welfare support service to students living in University managed accommodation, in order to help students settle into life at QMU and support them on a continuous basis throughout their stay.
To enhance the culture of community within the residences, addressing student issues through supportive and, where necessary, disciplinary measures within the agreed policies and guidelines.
To develop and implement programmes designed for the student community, aimed at enhancing student wellbeing, academic excellence and campus life.
The role holder must possess a flexible approach towards work as occasional evening and weekend work will be required.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
To ensure that a safe, orderly and supportive residential environment is provided to all residents
To supervise a small team of Residence Life Assistants; providing support and direction and ensuring that tasks are carried out effectively; monitoring progress on an on-going basis and through formal appraisals
To support and empower resident students to find solutions to problems, signposting to other services as appropriate and escalating serious issues promptly; and to ensure that concerns relating to resident students are addressed without delay
To mediate inter-tenant conflicts and encourage good communication between students
To develop and deliver Residence Life Assistant induction training and follow up training sessions
Under the direction of the Accommodation Manager, to participate in the implementation of the University's Halls of Residence Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure, including organising disciplinary meetings, completing paperwork, and conducting/participating in disciplinary meetings
To ensure residents' understanding of, and compliance with, residence terms and conditions and code of conduct
To co-ordinate the delivery of information on issues relevant to resident students; including planning and organising information campaigns on various aspects of student/campus life and wellbeing
To co-ordinate the organisation and running of social events within the residences, including attending the halls committee meetings
To maintain and monitor department social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
To communicate with other universities within working groups and sharing of best practice
To perform administrative duties, including ensuring that e-mails and telephone calls are answered appropriately in accordance with department KPIs; and that all records are completed and stored in line with procedures and with regard to confidentiality and Data Protection legislation
To provide a friendly, professional and customer orientated frontline service to students using own initiative when dealing with enquiries or tasks
To deal with all general accommodation queries and assist with the allocation of rooms to students
To familiarise yourself with services within the University and Students' Union, co-ordinating and communicating as appropriate to actively support students and the aims of the department and the University
To recognise your own limitations and work within them, seeking further advice and guidance as necessary
To contribute to the development of procedures and practice and take the initiative on the development of new procedures where necessary
To ensure you observe University and Accommodation Services Policies and Procedures as communicated to you, including Health and Safety Policies

Educated to degree level or equivalent with experience working with students
Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
Awareness of issues affecting students living in residence
Administration and organisational skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Time management skills and the ability to prioritise own workload
Capable of working under pressure or in unexpected situations
Experience in training, selection and supervision of staff
Awareness of University support services and external support services
Ability to present information in innovative, student-focused ways
Ability to act on own initiative and work as part of a teamPerson Specification - Desirable
Knowledge and understanding of the Residence Life model
Experience of providing and developing social, sporting and educational programmes
Knowledge of the University campus and the facilities available to visitors
Knowledge of Edinburgh and the surrounding area
Full driving license and willingness to drive University vehicles if necessary
