Role Purpose
The Wellbeing Service is part of Student Services. The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) will work closely with the other services located with Student Services such as Counselling, Student Funding, Careers and Employability and Disability Services. They will also work closely with the Programme team in Paramedic Sciences.
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) provides mental health and wellbeing interventions for paramedic science students experiencing medium to long-term and at times complex mental health difficulties. The role holder will provide triage and risk assessment, case load management, care planning, evidence based interventions and support.
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) is responsible for crisis response support to students at risk including those who are experiencing mental health crisis. The role requires decision making related to student risk, liaison and referral to relevant stakeholders.
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) will provide support for students preparing for placement as well as during placement and after placement to support the wellbeing and mental health of paramedic science students.
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) will develop partnership working with multi-agencies external to QMU to promote and support student wellbeing.
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) has a key role to liaise with QMU staff related to concerns regarding student wellbeing, welfare and risk ultimately promoting student engagement and retention.
The role holder will deliver education sessions at curriculum level for the paramedic science programme and joint sessions with other programmes when appropriate on topics related to mental health and wellbeing.
Promote and manage student Stay on Course referrals and support.
Link and promote University strategy specifically related to mental health and wellbeing as a whole University approach. Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in line with University policy in all aspects of the job role.
They will also provide some central wellbeing support and advice where required.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
The Wellbeing Adviser (Paramedic Science) will be expected to:
Person Specification – Essential
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Honours Degree with professional experience in the areas of Student Support Social work, or equivalent psychological therapies qualification
Trained in suicide prevention/intervention (such as ASIST), mental health first aid or similar (such as SMHFA)
EXPERIENCE
Demonstrable experience of supporting students/people with mental health issues
Experience in assessing risk and taking appropriate action in support of students
Experience in mentoring in regard of mental health and wellbeing
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge and understanding of the HE support system
Knowledge of help and support available to students for mental health issues
Awareness of disability issues, in particular mental health issues and autistic spectrum disorders, and their potential impact on academic study
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Excellent administrative, organisational, record keeping and case management skills
Excellent communication skills, oral and written
Ability to work autonomously, plan, organise and prioritise a full workload
Able to work efficiently and effectively both independently and as part of a team
Ability to maintain boundaries and work calmly under pressure
Ability to use initiative and take independent decisions to ensure prompt and timely resolution of student issues
Ability to demonstrate good listening skills and to show empathy with students
Able to work flexibly and create good working relationships throughout the institution
Person Specification – Desirable
Suitable postgraduate qualification (preferably in the area of mentoring/life-coaching, counselling etc.) or appropriate sector experience
Experience of working in a HE environment
Experience in managing projects
Experience of working with severe and enduring mental health problems
Knowledge of the Equality Act (2010)
Knowledge of HE record systems, e.g. SITS
Understanding of the issues affecting students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and cultures
Ability to contribute to policy development, development of training material, and on-line resources
Comfortable working in a multi-professional team with a shared confidentiality policy
