Role Purpose
The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) works to promote critical thinking, practical engagement and social justice on issues of health and development globally, with a particular emphasis on low income and conflict-affected countries. We facilitate learning for students from many nations through courses provided in Edinburgh and, increasingly, through online delivery; conduct research; and advise governments, Ministries of Health and non-governmental organisations on issues of health and social development. The Institute represents one of the 'flagship' areas of work at QMU, with a strong commitment to profiling research of policy and practice relevance.

With the growth of research activity and the development of our programme of doctoral education we require an Institute Officer to strengthen support and coordination in these areas. The role holder will assist staff of IGHD in the effective and efficient delivery of the education, research work of the Institute through a diverse range of administrative and support activities, with specific responsibilities for project administration and coordination of activities for our growing number of doctoral students.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
Principal duties:
Support smooth project administration through the maintenance of effective records, liaising with IGHD staff and other university departments as required
Manage invoicing, travel bookings and other logistics related to research projects
Administer travel claims and reimbursements for staff and others engaged in funded research
Support the preparation of project proposals and project reports
Manage records of doctoral student applications and the progress of current students in liaison with the academic lead for the IGHD Doctoral Programme and the QMU Graduate School
Coordinate events and activities that develop the doctoral research culture of the Institute, including outreach and engagement with part-time and overseas-based students.
Support, and when necessary cover, the duties of the other Institute Officers in relation to teaching programmes, electronic filing, event management, profiling the work of the Institute and other duties as assigned.
Key objectives:
Enable efficient and effective operation of active research projects
Provide a responsive point-of-contact for all doctoral students studying with the Institute, prospective IGHD doctoral students and IGHD staff serving as doctoral supervisors
Support and assist other Institute Officers in the smooth running of the Institute
Person Specification - Essential
Relevant experience in an administrative role
Good communication skills, spoken and written
Good organisational skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
Strong IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and the internet
HNC level qualification or above
Ability to work on own or part of a team.
